Pleasure-quarter story Edo

Shinagawa Shinju (The Shinagawa Love Suicide)

品川心中・しながわしんじゅう

The story

Osome, an aging courtesan in Shinagawa, is short of money and dreading the end of her contract. She decides to stage a lovers' double suicide and picks Kinzo, a meek lending-library man, as her partner. But no sooner has she pushed him off the pier than her money troubles are unexpectedly solved.

What to listen for

Only rakugo could turn something as grim as a double suicide into wicked comedy. Enjoy its dark, mischievous streak.

Background

A shinju was a romantic double suicide, a theme treated with high tragedy in classic Japanese drama, which rakugo cheerfully spoofs. Courtesans worked on fixed-term contracts, and an aging one nearing her contract's end faced real desperation. Shinagawa was a post-town on Edo's edge with its own pleasure district.
